Aim
This course will equip GDC-registered Treatment Coordinators (TCOs) with the communication needed to complete and use a digital intraoral scan. It will also cover scanning skills to deliver exceptional patient care and use the tools available for patient communication within iTero.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Understand the essential verbal skills and communication techniques required when performing digital scans across various patient workflows.
- Discuss the theory behind different TCO workflows and the significance of tailoring communication to each patient’s needs during scanning.
- Learn about the two types of consultations a Treatment Coordinator conducts: free consultations for high-value patients and initial consultations before the dentist’s assessment.
- Review DCPs’ ethical and legal responsibilities in the TCO role, ensuring compliance with General Dental Council (GDC) standards.
- Understand the 10-step roadmap to meet all ethical and legal requirements, including obtaining appropriate referrals or prescriptions for digital scans.
- Learn how to utilise advanced features of the iTero scanner to enhance patient consultations and outcomes.
- Discuss strategies to confidently communicate with implant, cosmetic, orthodontic, or nervous patients.
- Review ways to integrate improved scanning techniques and communication skills into daily practice to elevate patient care.
- Understand how to avoid common pitfalls when scanning and presenting scan results to patients.
- Learn to build confidence and competence in the TCO role through hands-on experience with digital scanning technology.
Summary
This course empowers General Dental Council (GDC) registered dental nurses performing the Treatment Coordinator (TCO) role with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to deliver exceptional patient care. Across three focused sessions, participants will:
- Develop advanced verbal communication skills tailored to patient workflows, ensuring a personalised and practical approach to scanning and consultations.
- Explore the TCO’s ethical and legal responsibilities, gaining a clear understanding of compliance requirements and how to meet them positively and confidently.
- Participate in hands-on training with the iTero scanner, mastering its advanced features to enhance patient consultations and integrate digital workflows effectively.
By the end of the day, participants will have a comprehensive toolkit to elevate their role as a TCO, improve patient experiences, and ensure compliance with professional standards.

Leanna Best
Lead trainer for Horton Consulting. Leanna brings an extensive background and practical expertise from her employment at Clifton Dental Studio under Dr. Neil Gerrard. Registered with the GDC, she has excelled as a Dental Care Professional (DCP), Treatment Coordinator, and leader of the TCO team. Since 2018 Leanna has been instrumental in supporting Laura, earning the role of lead trainer not just for her knowledge and ability to train team members, but also for her infectious enthusiasm and commitment to developing the skills of her clients teams. Her contributions extend beyond her immediate responsibilities, as Leanna is highly sought after for her training and consultancy services. Her workshops are acclaimed by both business owners and staff for their impact and effectiveness. Currently, Leanna serves as a Treatment Coordinator Manager for the Smile Store brand, under the guidance of Dr. Sandeep Kumar. In this role, she supports TCOs across multiple locations, continuing her commitment to excellence while maintaining her GDC registration. Outside of her professional life, Leanna is dedicated to her children, Drew and Desi. Family is her cornerstone, and she treasures the moments spent with her loved ones and close friends. Additionally, Leanna attributes her positive outlook to her regular gym routine, underscoring the importance of physical well-being in achieving mental health.
